Tackling Food Waste: Solutions for Extending Shelf Life

Food waste and climate change are more intricately connected than you might imagine. In fact, the United Nations has listed lowering the amount of food waste as one of its 17 Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, noting that approximately 17% to 33% of all food is wasted. This leads to more than landfill fodder. Decaying food produces methane, which contributes between 10% and 17% of the overall total of greenhouse gas emissions. Bell Chem recognizes the role food additives play in prolonging shelf life, which leads to less food wasted. Your food additive supplier has the following inventory to sustain our foods – and our planet.

How can oxygen be harmful?

Think about an old car left to the elements. Your brain probably immediately noted the rust on the car. Rust is the transformation of iron in the presence of oxygen, which produces iron oxide. Oxygen has this same negative effect on many food items as well. However, vitamins C and E, as well as beta carotene, are natural antioxidants that keep oxygen from discoloring and removing flavor from foods.

Meat and poultry are positively influenced by green tea extracts and rosemary, which enhance the appearance, quality, and taste of meats through their high percentage of phenolic compounds. These compounds double as powerful antioxidants.

Fermentation

Centuries of fermented foods have proven how well vinegar (acetic acid) maintains food’s shelf life. Acetic acid is inexpensive, well studied, and used worldwide.

Simple salts

Sodium chloride, or table salt, is more than a flavor enhancer. It acts as a preserver, changing the environment so drastically via a change in osmotic pressure that microbes lose water through their thin membranes until they are completely desiccated.

Potassium chloride performs the same role, and these salts are often used concurrently as a brine solution. Salts are often added to meat where they preserve, improve the mouthfeel of the food, and lock in water.

Organic acid salts

Organic acids, such as propionic acid, lactic acid, and acetic acid, inhibit microbe and pathogen growth by lowering the overall pH of food products. While foods can exist in this environment, pathogens cannot.

Ascorbic Acid - Vitamin C Monique Day Ascorbic Acid - Vitamin C Monique Day

Why Ascorbic Acid is Found in Skin Care Products

Look at the ingredient list in many skin care products and ascorbic acid is likely to be included. What causes so many manufacturers to reach for ascorbic acid when creating their products? Personal care raw materials supplier Bell Chem has several facts to share about ascorbic acid.

Many people interchange the words “ascorbic acid” and “vitamin C”; in fact, vitamin C comes in many forms, but ascorbic acid is its purest form. For anyone worried about using ascorbic acid, rest assured. More dermatological research has been conducted on this chemical than on any other. The following attributes have been credited with using ascorbic acid.

Oxidative stress reduction

Free radicals are often the culprit in many of skin’s anomalies, such as damage to nucleic acids, proteins, and cellular membranes. Ascorbic acid’s excess of electrons in its outer shell quickly adhere to free radicals, keeping them at bay. Free radicals stimulate a chain reaction of events leading to breakdowns of collagen, which keeps skin soft and supple, and elastin, which increases the elasticity of skin’s appearance. When free radicals are inert, these changes are less likely to occur because the connective tissues remain intact.

Photoprotection

The addition of ascorbic acid to sunscreen enhances its ability to protect against UV rays. The same free radicals as mentioned previously are activated by UVA rays, which affect the underlying dermis by mutating collagen, elastin, and proteoglycans; and UVB rays, which primarily affect the epidermis where mutations can lead to sunburn and skin cancer.

Alone, sunscreens block approximately 55% of free radicals associated with UV exposure. With ascorbic acid as an ingredient, the propensity to block harmful UV rays reduces erythema by 52% and sunburn cell formation by approximately 50%.

Removal of skin discoloration

Ascorbic acid inhibits melanin formation, which is responsible for freckles and other patches of skin discoloration.

Food Additives: Debunking Myths and Exploring Benefits for Food Producers

Unless your main source of food is your backyard garden, chances are that your food contains food additives. Food ingredient supplier Bell Chem wishes to shed light on food additives, since the vast majority enhance food and beverage flavor, safety, stability, shelf life, and so many other factors we find make foods palatable. Let’s examine different categories of food additives to learn how they improve what we consume.

Antioxidants

Oxidation of many foods causes spoilage. Fats and oils are especially prone to becoming rancid when exposed to oxygen. The addition of antioxidants hinders this reaction, which prolongs shelf life.

Colorings

Would you eat butter if it was white? Butter produced with a high milk fat content has a naturally yellow color, but commercial dairy cows generally have a lower milkfat and higher output of milk. One batch of milk may differ in color from another, which leads many manufacturers to add a colorant to the butter so all their product appears one shade of yellow.

Flavorings

A major food additive that enhances flavor is salt. This spice increases the amount of other flavors in a mix, which is why cakes and cookies contain a small amount of salt in every mix.

Many health-conscious individuals, as well as those who suffer from diabetes, must watch their sugar intake closely. Artificial sweeteners satisfy sweet cravings without the unwanted sugar spike of granulated sugar.

Flavorings that occur naturally in some foods may be added to other foods to enhance the flavor. For instance, a natural fruit flavoring may be added to organic cereal. This flavoring is organic and natural while still being a food additive.

Preservatives

Imagine a store shelf full of fresh bread. Imagine running out of bread in the middle of the day because you did not want to overstock or, on the other hand, the next day throwing out half your inventory. Preservatives inhibit the growth of mold, bacteria, and other dangerous microorganisms that consume your products before the end-user does. Without preservatives, most of the food in grocery stores would be inedible.

Stabilizers

During manufacture, ingredients must be carefully measured and mixed so one bite tastes distinctly like the next. Stabilizers, such as emulsifiers, maintain a steady amount of mixture without separation into individual ingredients. Anti-caking additives absorb liquid to keep mixes from becoming lumpy while foaming agents maintain the fluffiness of whipped cream.

Remember, foods and beverages in grocery stores face careful scrutiny by the Food and Drug Administration. All food additives are tested, monitored, and controlled. Another thought to keep in mind is the word chemical. Most people associate this word with danger, but everything you see, touch, smell, and taste is composed of chemicals. Very few chemical combinations are truly life-threatening, and the FDA would prohibit their use in foods.

Polysorbate 20, Polysorbate 80 Monique Day Polysorbate 20, Polysorbate 80 Monique Day

Understanding the Uses of Polysorbates in Personal Care Products

Polysorbates come in a variety of strengths – 80, 60, and 20, depending on the mols of ethylene oxide present – and your personal care raw material supplier Bell Chem ensures you have access to all three for your personal care product creation business.

Polysorbate 80

Polysorbate 80 is renowned for its role in improving the feel of cosmetics. This multi-use fatty acid derived from oleic acid is an emulsifier and a surfactant. Both these properties smooth the feel of skin care products, allowing all ingredients to blend thoroughly and spread easily. How is this accomplished, though?

Surfactants lower the surface tension of a liquid or solid, which causes the items that would normally not mix well, such as water and oil, to thoroughly combine. However, this combination will not last when the product is not shaken. To remedy this, an emulsifier is added. This double duty of polysorbate 80 allows cleansers in which it is an ingredient to suspend the skin’s surface debris and oils, safely lifting them from the epidermis before washing them away.

Polysorbate 80 is visually recognizable from other polysorbates since it presents as a viscous yellow liquid.

Polysorbate 60

If your product relies on foam and aeration, your answer is polysorbate 60. You can find this versatile emulsifier and surfactant in gels, shaving cream, and foam cleansers. All the properties of polysorbate 80 are similar for this version of the polysorbate family.

Polysorbate 20

Derived from sorbitol, a medium-chain triglyceride originally discovered in apples, peaches, and pears, polysorbate 20 is a cleansing agent, emulsifier, fragrance enhancer, and surfactant. Its reduced amount of ethylene oxide appears to be more gentle to the skin.

Unlike polysorbate 80, many personal care manufacturers add polysorbate 20 to their products for another reason: scent. The source of this aroma is its derivation from fruit, and the addition of this ingredient enhances any product’s scent.

Polysorbate 20 is recognized as a clear to light yellow viscous liquid. The clarity of polysorbate 20 gives it a lighter appearance, which many manufacturers favor while the viscosity stabilizes the product at a greater range of temperatures.

You will find polysorbates in facial creams, lotions and balms, hairspray, and sunscreen.

Malic Acid Monique Day Malic Acid Monique Day

6 Key Benefits of Malic Acid for Skin Care

The name malic acid hardly sounds like a chemical you would like to add to your skincare routine, but malic acid has the potential to improve skin texture and appearance. Personal care chemical supplier Bell Chem ensures malic acid is on hand to ship to you today.

As its backstory, malic acid’s name is derived from the Latin word malum, or “apple.” It’s the tart flavor imparted when you crunch into a juicy apple or drink a slightly acidic wine. Malic acid is a member of the alpha hydroxy-acid (AHA) family, which is renowned for its exfoliation ability.

Exfoliation

As an AHA, malic acid breaks the connection between cells on the epidermis. This relaxation between dead skin cells and their living neighbors stimulates exfoliation. As the dead skin cells flake away, newer – and more radiant – skin shines through.

Acne prevention

Acne is caused by the blockage of dead skin cells inside the skin’s pores. As the pores fill with sebum, the sebum is not able to be naturally released. This causes blackheads and bacterial infections, which can exacerbate breakouts. The exfoliating function of malic acid lifts away the dead skin cells and releases the underlying sebum so it can properly protect the epidermis.

As a humectant

Malic acid has the ability to attract water from deeper layers of the body’s skin or directly from the atmosphere. As water is drawn toward the epidermis, the overall feeling of dryness disappears and the skin feels rejuvenated.

Patients diagnosed with eczema or other skin disorders may find malic acid a simple treatment, not only because it is a humectant, but also because it retains moisture within the skin. This leads to less itchy and irritated skin.

pH balance

Many chemicals used in cosmetics only react under specific pH controls. If the product is too basic, the addition of malic acid balances the compound to allow the chemicals to react properly

Collagen rejuvenation

Dr. Annie Chiu, founder of the Derm Institute in California, states that higher concentrations of malic acid penetrate the dermis and stimulate collagen production. This vital protein is responsible for the creation and repair of cells, including skin cells. As the body ages, the amount of collagen decreases. Adding malic acid to the skin routine can strengthen skin texture, removing fine lines and wrinkles.

Gentle enough for all skin types

Although it is an acid, malic acid is so gentle almost any skin type can safely utilize it. The molecular size of malic acid is larger than other AHAs, which means it is less likely to penetrate deeply beneath the surface.

Exploring the Use of Aluminum Sulfate for Water Treatment

The importance of using aluminum sulfate in water treatment cannot be overstated. Industrial chemical supplier Bell Chem stocks this quickly functional chemical that treats and purifies water under many conditions. Read how your industry can better utilize aluminum sulfate to treat water.

A dynamic flocculant

Aluminum sulfate’s ionic properties allow it to snag microscopic particles such as phosphorus and nitrogen floating freely in water treatment areas, combining these smaller particles into much larger particles until they are physically unable to float. As the unwanted particles sink to the bottom of the tank, they are quickly filtered from the water.

Municipal water tanks, as well as personal swimming pools, find this task quite useful since phosphorus and nitrogen are both nutrients algae devour, and the presence of algae in potable drinking water, fishing ponds, recreational lakes, or swimming pools never produces a positive outcome.

Why aluminum sulfate?

Reservoirs of potable water can be treated within the treatment facility. Treating water inside the facility also requires additional chemicals that can alter the smell and taste of drinking water. However, water treatment is exceedingly easier in cost and effort when the water is treated with aluminum sulfate before it enters the facility.

Stormwater-holding ponds and recreational lakes often find an excess of fertilizer runoff, which increases both turbidity and the presence of unwanted algae. Not only is this unsightly, it is unsafe for aquatic wildlife and recreational boating and swimming. Aluminum sulfate quickly eradicates toxic algal blooms by diminishing the presence of fertilizer runoff, which stanches the growth of algae and allows the aquatic animals and plant life to thrive.

How to Safely Store Your Chemicals

Searching for the perfect chemical for your industry or job opportunity seems like the most important part of stocking chemicals. However, an even more important part of chemical ownership is their safe storage. Industrial chemical supplier Bell Chem’s expansive inventory proves chemicals can be stored and maintained without incident, but this does not come about accidentally. Our decades of expertise help you answer your chemical storage questions.

Storing acids

  • Use storage cabinets specifically designed to house acidic chemicals.

  • Dedicate cabinets solely to acids. Ensure the cabinet doors are labeled “corrosives.”

  • Ensure like acids are stored together. Do not mix flammable and inflammable acids, and separate oxidizing acids from organic and inorganic acids.

  • Store spill control chemicals and neutralizers in close proximity to acids.

Storing bases

  • Use storage cabinets specifically designed to house basic chemicals.

  • Dedicate cabinets solely to bases. Ensure the cabinet doors are labeled “corrosives.”

  • Use proper containers for bases. For instance, inorganic hydroxides require polyethylene containers.

  • Store spill control chemicals and neutralizers in close proximity to acids.

Storing compressed gasses

  • Secure cylinders upright with chains, 8” to 10” off the floor.

  • Replace the valve cap when not in use.

  • Tag the cylinder’s status as “full,” “empty,” or “in use.”

Storing flammables

  • Flammable liquids must be stored in an appropriate refrigerator or specifically designed cabinet.

  • Store flammables far from combustible materials.

  • Store spill control chemicals and Class D fire extinguishers in close proximity to acids.

Storing oxidizers/explosive chemicals

  • Maintain a cool temperature with low moisture around oxidizers.

  • Store oxidizers away from flammable and combustible materials, such as Bunsen burners, paper, cardboard, et cetera.

Storing peroxide-forming chemicals

  • Ensure the chemicals are used within one year of opening by dating containers with the day of first use or by the expiration date.

  • Store peroxide-forming chemicals in a cool, dark, dry area, but never refrigerate.

  • Only store in airtight containers.

Storage guidelines for all chemicals

  • For any chemical, check your inventory frequently and dispose of any chemicals that experience unwanted cloudiness, color or odor change, change in state of matter, pressure variation, or deterioration of the container. Use SDS guidelines for any chemical disposal.

  • Heavy bottles of chemicals should be stored closer to ground level, but not directly on the ground, with light bottles stored higher. No corrosive or liquid chemicals should be stored above eye level.

  • Lock all potentially dangerous chemicals when not in use.

  • Tightly cap refrigerated chemicals. Wrap in Parafilm if in doubt.

  • Volatile chemicals should be stored in ventilated cabinets.

  • Do not store any chemicals in fume hoods since it may interfere with the performance of the hood. Likewise, do not store chemicals on a workbench. Return all chemicals to their proper storage areas when not in use.

What You Need to Know About Monosodium Phosphate

Monosodium phosphate (MSP) has a variety of aliases, including monosodium orthophosphate, sodium acid phosphate, sodium biphosphate, sodium dihydrogen phosphate, sodium phosphate monobasic, NaH2PO4, and H2NaO4P. Generally packaged as a white granular solid or powder, MSP acts as an acid regulator, nutrient supplement, and sequestrant. Read more about monosodium phosphate from your food ingredient supplier, Bell Chem.

Monosodium phosphate is a water soluble white powder derived from phosphoric acid as a sodium salt. Its main uses include as an emulsifier and a buffering agent. In these capacities, it is often utilized in the following industries.

Agriculture

Animal feed often contains MSP as an ingredient because it provides large and domestic animals an inexpensive source of sodium and phosphorus, two important chemicals that regulate the body. Granular monosodium phosphate acts as a crop fertilizer proving plants need these ingredients as much as animals.

Chemical industry

With its superior buffering ability, monosodium phosphate is found in millions of labs as a biological, biochemical, and chromatographic reagent.

Food and beverage

When the pH levels in food are too basic or acidic, chemical processes do not perform as intended. This can lead to idiosyncrasies ranging from odd tastes to microbial growth. Monosodium phosphate adjusts the pH of products by acting as a buffer, which increases shelf life. In dairy products, monosodium phosphate increases the solubility of proteins, sequesters calcium ions to capture water molecules, and increases fat emulsification.

Many dry mixes contain monosodium phosphate as a thickener, adding viscosity to stews and instant potatoes. As a salt, MSP is used as a cure for dried meats; surprisingly, it also sequesters water to maintain moisture within the meats as it deters spoilage through microbial growth. Much like baking soda or yeast, monosodium phosphate is a leavening agent, producing a gas inside baked goods to make dough rise.

Industrial cleaning

Monosodium phosphate acts as a cleaning detergent in many industrial chemical cleaners.

Textile manufacturing

In textiles, monosodium phosphate buffers acidic conditions to increase reactions of acid dyeing of fibers as well as dye printing.

Metal surfaces coated with monosodium phosphate form an insoluble metal phosphate which deters corrosion, protects the finish, improves metal hardness, and increases electrical properties. If a metal surface is to be painted, monosodium phosphate increases the adhesion of paint.

Water treatment

Its ability to buffer gives monosodium phosphate a starring role in water treatment as a corrosion controller. When it is paired with polyphosphates, it also obstructs scale formation. Other water treatment chemicals are based directly from monosodium phosphate.

Bell Chem is a food ingredient supplier based in Longwood, FL (just north of Orlando) with hundreds of products stocked in their 50,000+ square-foot warehouse, including monosodium phosphate. Where Sorbitol Comes from and How It’s Used

Sorbitol, also known as glucitol, naturally occurs in many stone fruits, such as apricots, peaches, and nectarines. It can also be extracted from apples and berries. Laboratories synthesize glucose to produce sorbitol, and manufacturers find glucose from corn, which contains almost 100% glucose, to be the ultimate source for sorbitol.

What exactly is sorbitol, then, and why would manufacturers go through the trouble of converting corn glucose to sorbitol? Food ingredient supplier Bell Chem can answer that question and tell you how this important sweetener is used across industries.

Health and wellness

Patients with diabetes find sorbitol gives them the taste they crave without sugar alcohol being fully absorbed in the digestive system. In fact, only 50%-80% of sorbitol is absorbed independent of insulin to be converted to glycogen in the liver, and over 100 years of studies on sorbitol prove its efficiency for diabetic patients. Sorbitol does not spike blood sugar levels since lower levels of insulin are secreted by the liver.

Sorbitol can also be used topically. The surfactant power of sorbitol loosens debris from the scalp while its water solubility wicks that debris away. As a humectant, sorbitol can also maintain a proper level of moisture when added to shampoo, conditioner, or other hair care products.

Pharmaceuticals

The majority of pharmaceutical tablets contain sorbitol as an ingredient, and many over-the-counter medications rely on sorbitol’s sweet flavor.

Table sugar causes dental cavities. The Food and Drug Administration has deemed sorbitol beneficial since it is not metabolized by oral bacteria; therefore, bacteria are unable to survive and form cavities. When added to toothpaste and other oral pharmaceuticals, sorbitol leaves the mouth feeling fresh.

The epidermis is a physical barrier, protecting our internal organs from environmental harm. When sorbitol is applied externally, skin is more quickly repaired as moisture is maintained.

Foods and beverages

As a sugar alcohol, sorbitol’s lower caloric value (approximately 2.6 calories per gram) gives it a starring role in low-calorie and sugar-free foods, specifically chewing gum.

In packaged foods and confections, sorbitol acts as a humectant and preservative, retaining moisture as it repels bacterial growth. As an ingredient, sorbitol balances the varied flavors within foods, giving a much more harmonized flavor.

Polyurethane manufacturing

As a polyol alcohol with multiple hydroxyl groups, sorbitol is one of polyurethane’s raw materials. In fact, sorbitol is considered a green product since it is a sustainable biological resource. Its rigidity and high performance are prized in the polyurethane industry and sorbitol is used in imitation wood products, heat insulators, packaging, and flotation devices.

When you’re ready to order sorbitol for your business, give us a call and we will fill your order rapidly and accurately. Caustic Soda Beads and Their Uses Across Industries

The use of caustic soda beads – also known as caustic soda pearls, sodium hydroxide beads, or lye – to remove excessive buildup of tartrates in machinery tanks and lines is well known, but you may not realize how many industries utilize caustic soda beads. Industrial chemical supplier Bell Chem describes how your industry may benefit from stocking Bell Chem’s caustic soda beads, and how to properly handle this important chemical.

Aluminum production

Bauxite is the raw material that produces aluminum. Caustic soda dissolves bauxite ore.

Paper manufacturing

As wood is pulped and bleached, caustic soda is mixed with sodium sulfide to remove all impurities save cellulose, which ultimately becomes paper.

Soapmaking

Whether the base material is derived from plants or animals, caustic soda beads break down the oil components into fatty acids and glycerol causing saponification.

Natural gas industry

Petroleum is produced and processed with the aid of caustic soda beads.

Textile industry

Cotton production occurs more easily with caustic soda beads. When cotton fibers are boiled in a caustic soda solution in a process known as scouring. This removes all impurities from the cotton.

Across industries

Caustic soda beads are vital as a feedstock in the chemical processes that eventually produce adhesives, fabrics, plastic, solvents, and other products. Because of the extreme alkalinity of caustic soda beads, they are often used to adjust the pH in many industrial chemical reactions. The cleaning power of caustic soda beads stems from its high alkalinity; it can quickly dissolve fat, grease, oil, and protein along with other organic materials.

Precautions with use

With a pH of 14, caustic soda beads are indeed caustic. As such, when dissolving them in water before use, be sure to add the beads to the water and not the water to the beads. Ensure the water is in a proper container that will react properly with highly alkaline chemicals. The reaction will cause an exothermic reaction, and the container will become hot to the touch. Stir slowly without splashing and wear protective clothing. Remember, caustic soda beads and caustic soda both break down organic matter and you are made of organic matter. Safety goggles and heavy-duty rubber or nitrile gloves are essential.

For cleaning surfaces, ensure the surface will react favorably with caustic soda. A 10% solution of caustic soda beads and water is usually sufficient for most cleaning projects. Spray the solution on the surface, and after 10 minutes rinse away as much residue as possible before air drying. Do not use caustic soda in food manufacturing, prepping, or dining areas. Use caustic soda as a cleaner and not as a disinfectant. While bacteria will not survive when sprayed directly with caustic soda, the disinfectant properties are not considered reliable enough to classify caustic soda as a disinfectant.
